Russian Case Study: The Influence of Severe Weather Conditions on Reliability of Overhead Line Infrastructure

Abstract
Due to the opening of new fields and construction of responsible interstate long-distance systems for transportation of oil and gas in difficult climatic conditions it is required to provide reliable power supply of field equipment. Therefore, it is necessary to provide the reliable operability of overhead lines (OHL) as key installations in electricity transmission and distribution systems. The challenge is significant due to severe climatic conditions which are very different and territory dependent in Russia. Therefore, the geographical factor has importance and influence on OHL reliability under severe ice and wind loads. Generally the geographical factor has an impact on the value of ice deposits depth and includes a number of parameters: absolute and relative heights of OHL route passing through territory of a region, land relief, arrangement of highland slopes related to preferred wind direction, etc.
