Localization of E-M interference sources in air-insulated substation using VHF/UHF antenna arrays

Abstract
The demand for high reliability of electricity supply, which is commonly required nowadays, forces the need for diagnostic tests and continuous monitoring of the correct functioning of electrical power equipment. Various test and measurement methods are used in the diagnosis of high-voltage insulating systems. Their selection depends on the construction materials and the design of tested objects. An important group of methods used in diagnostics are investigations using antenna detection of electromagnetic interferences. The presented work deals with the detection and localization of E-M pulse sources caused by partial discharges generated in the air-insuleted high voltage transmission systems. Defects occurring in overhead transmission lines and in equipment installed in power substations, which are characterized by local increasing of the electric field strength over the critical value, result in generation of partial discharges in various forms (corona, surface discharges, and internal discharges). Formed as a result E-M pulses with a very short rise times and a narrow widths can be used to detection and location of insulating systems defects by broadband detection of disturbances in VHF/UHF bands.
The report presents an analysis of the partial discharge location in air-insulated substations using few basic antenna array systems. This is illustrated by the results of laboratory measurements collected with selected directional antenna detection systems used for E-M disturbance detection.
