New Trends in MV Grids and Their Impacts

Abstract
The paper is focused on the new trends in development of current medium voltage (MV) distribution systems. We considered two approach of the development. Firstly, we evaluated installation of new automatic switching devices and secondly building of new distribution cable lines.
Pole-mounted reclosers are considered as automatic switching devices for overhead MV lines and smart MV switchgears are presumed for cable grid. The benefits of our work are above all a proposal of a placement methodology of the new automatic switching devices and calculation of their respective contribution towards SAIDI and SAIFI mitigation.
The second trend in MV grid development expects using cables, therefore reconstruction of current overhead lines to underground and interconnections of long radial feeders are included in the proposal for a future grid. However, the construction of new distribution lines in new routes is very expensive, thus the benefits of these interconnections have to be carefully evaluated according to described methodology. The impact of using cables is measurable in capacitive current size in resonant earthed MV network. Increasing of those currents will cause problems in a future distribution system operation and higher costs.
