Balancing of stochastic generation of a renewable park by means of thermal, hydro power plants and bi-directional flows from neighboring energy networks

We study specific problem of integrating large renewable park to electrical power system based on coal fuel and thermal electric power plants (TPP), which have low power ramp rates. We suppose that capacity of hydro power plants (HPP) is insufficient to cover the daily schedule load peaks and the balance in the power system is achieved by expensive and undesired bi-directional flows from neighboring energy networks. The perfect control of the power system is obtained when the flows are close to zero or at least below a certain threshold. We study the use of TPP with its slow and monotonic increase or decrease power and HPP with its restricted volume of energy to balance the random generation of renewable park.
